Emergency tips for your dog\'s firework anxiety

Posted: Friday 31st October, 2008

Every year pet owners are caught out by the fire work season and find that it might already be too late to desensitise their pets to the effects of loud bangs and flashes. However, there are still a few things you can try to calm down or to distract especially dogs :

- Use a DAP (Dog appeasing pheromone) diffuser or spray in the house. For anxious cats use FELIWAY diffuser or spray. Both are designed to calm nervous dogs or cats down. You can get these at the surgery without a prescription.

- Try playing some music louder than usual and leave all the lights on in the house at night to reduce the effect of sudden flashes.

- Try to use carrot shaped foam ear plugs in dogs. They are usually very well tolerated and fit well into dogs' ear canals. You can usually get them from a local gun smith.

- The  clinic is keeping at all times herbal Valerian and Skullcap drops and tablets, that have a calming effect on most dogs and cats without any negative side effects.

- If all of the above fails, please contact us for presription veterinary medicines that are designed to sedate the most anxious pets.
